"The luminous islands" at the auditòrium Sa Màniga

"The luminous islands" at the auditòrium Sa Màniga
Next Saturday, June 17, at 8.30p.m. the exhibition "The luminous islands" will be opened at the auditorium Sa Màniga de Cala Millor. The show will present about thirty images of photographic work by Joaquim Gomis, Raoul Hausmann, Florence Henri and Sibylle von Kaskel. These creators have the common denominator of having been linked with the vanguardist movement and having found in the Balearics the perfect synthesis between tradition and modernism.

During the 30s, the Balearics were one of the destinations where numerous artists lived, attracted by the virgin scenery, the traditions, the climate and the architecture, particularly that of Ibiza, where the popular buildings corresponded with the modern ideal of the era. Then Mallorca had become an important tourist centre, and Palma in the fashionable city. The photographers Raoul Hausmann, Florence Henri, Sibylle von Kaskel and Joaquim Gomis were four of the artists who captured, via their particular visions, one of the golden eras of the Balearics and of photographic creativity.

To accompany the exhibition, Sa Màniga is organising two complementary activities: a commented visit to the exhibition for the public in general, on June 28 at 8.30 p.m; and the conference "Los difusores de las vanguardias fotográficas en las Islas Balears", on July 5 at 8.30 p.m.; both by Dra. Maria Josep Mulet, professor at the Department for Historic Science and Theory of Arts at the Balearic University (UIB).
