The cathedral under the sea by Miquel Barceló

The cathedral under the sea by Miquel Barceló

Photographs by Agustí Torres about Barcelo's work.

Miquel Barceló has presented in the Frankfurt Book Fair the book of pictures La catedral bajo el mar, that shows his artistic work in the Sant Pere chapel of the Palma cathedral. The pictures, by Agustí Torres, document all the creative process, from the fist sketches to the installation in the Cathedral. The book has been published by Galaxia Gutenberg, a publishing house that has also edited other books by Miquel Barceló: Quaderns d'Àfrica, La Divina Comedia, Vol. I. Infierno, La Divina Comedia, Vol. II. Purgatorio and La Divina Comedia, Vol. III. Paraíso. Miquel Barceló, accompanied by the photographer Agustí Torres and the writer Biel Mesquida, has also presented in Frankfurt the German edition of "La Divina Comedia", published by Direct Group Bertelsmann.

The intervention by the Mallorca artist in the chapel of Sant Pere of the Palma Cathedral consists of a ceramic mural of 300 square meters that represents the miracle of the multiplication of bread and fish according the Gospel of St John. To carry out the mural, Barceló traveled to Vietri sul Mare (Naples) to work together with ceramist Vincenzo Santoriello. The work was installed in the chapel over one year ago, but cannot be seen yet, because five large stained glass windows and other complementary furniture still have to be constructed.

In the summer of 2004 the the Sa Nostra Cultural Center in Palma organised the exhibition "Miquel Barceló a la Seu" presenting a selection of the pictures by Agustí Torres about Barcelo's creative work at his workshop in Santoriello.
