The Italian Povera Art reaches Palma

The Italian Povera Art reaches Palma
The "Sala Gran" of the Sa Nostra Cultural Centre in Palma is holding until April 20 an exhibition dedicated to the "Arte Povera", an Italian movement held by a group of young artists, joined by the art critic Germano Celant, that was born in Turin at the end of the 60's.

After the second world war Turin became an industrial centre and received a wave of immigrants. This provoked a big change in the city and the 60's stand out because of the political commitment of the citizens, students' and workers' strikes, the importance of the Communist Party and the creation of groups in favour of the armed fight to liberate the working class from the capitalist oppression. Within this social context, a group of artists questioned the established models and began to work with poor materials, producing artistic creations considered at that time as anticommercial, antiformal and trivial.

This exhibition presents a selection of works by seven artists representative of the "Arte Povera": Alighiero Boetti, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Gilberto Zorio.
