Miquel Barceló awarded with one of prestigious Prince of Asturias prizes

Mallorcan artist Miquel Barcelo has been awarded with the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes 2003. The Jury of this prize, bestowed every year by the Fundación Príncipe de Asturias and carrying a 50 thousand euros cash award and a sculpture by Joan Miró, considers Barceló as one of the most important European contemporary artists.

Miquel Barceló is now working on the ceramic cover and the decoration of the chapel of Sant Pere in the Palma Cathedral. More over, until August 31 he is presenting in Sa Llotja de Palma a retrospective exhibition that groups twenty one big format paintings created between 1983 and 2003. The show is part of the cycle "Miquel Barceló a les Illes Balears" organised by the Fundació Balears 21 and commissioned by the Mallorcan artist Enrique Juncosa (director of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin) which has also reached the Museu d'Art Contemporani in Eivissa, the square outside the Town Hall of Sant Francesc Xavier in Formentera, the Museum of Menorca in Maó and the Roser in Ciutadella.

There is more information about the artist and his work on the web of the Fons Documental Miquel Barceló in Artà.
