First Underground line in Mallorca

It will link Palma and University Campus.

The local Minister of Public Works, Housing and Transport, Margarita Cabrer, together with the Palma Mayor, Catalina Cirer, and the rector of the UIB, Avel·lí Blasco, have presented the start of the work on the first underground line on Mallorca. This is the Tube line that will link Palma with the campus of the Balearic University. The project represents an investment of 115 million euros and it is foreseen that the line will be working at the beginning of 2007.

The line Palma-UIB will have two tracks and will be 7.2 kilometres of which 4 will be under ground and 3.2 will be built above ground level. The route will have seven underground stations (Plaza Espanya, Jacint Verdaguer, Son Oliva, Carretera de Bunyola, Asima, Son Castelló and Camí dels Reis) and two outside stations (Son Sardina and the UIB). The line has been designed for a maximum speed of 100 km/h and the link between the Plaza de España and the University should take 12 minutes.

According to a statement from the local minister, Margarita Cabrer, this first underground line is one of the most important policies of the Balearic Government to promote public transport.
