The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Palma, situated inside the old Renaissance city wall bulwark of Sant Pere in Palma, was opened on January 30, 2004. Projected by the architects Luis and Jaime García-Ruiz, Vicente Tomás and Ángel Sánchez-Cantalejo, the new building houses mainly the art collection belonging to the businessman Pere Serra, together with other works ceded or deposited by artists and institutions such as the Palma Town Council, the Mallorcan Council, the Balearic Autonomous Community and the savings bank Sa Nostra.

Built of white concrete, the new museum is intended to establish a constant relationship between the modern exhibition area and the old framework of the Sant Pere bulwark, from where spectacular views of the Cathedral, the Bellver Castle, the Passeig Marítim, the Passeig Mallorca and the Plaça Porta Santa Catalina can be enjoyed. The halls and terraces of the museum have offered since the opening a trip through modern and contemporary art of the Western Mediterranean with over 300 works, among paintings, drawings and sculpture by artists such as Picasso, Miró, Tàpies or Barceló. The visit to the museum ends in the old water tank of mediaeval origin, which has been restored to house temporary exhibitions.

Es Baluard also has a gift and book shop, a restaurant-cafeteria and the installations permit access and visits by people in wheel chairs or children in push chairs. Es Baluard is administered by a foundation comprised of the Balearic Autonomous Community, the Mallorcan Insular Council, the Palma Town Council and the Art Serra Foundation.

Visiting times between October 1 and May 31 are from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from June 1 to September 30 every day from 10 a.m. to midnight. Tickets cost 6 euros with reduced entry at 4.50 euros. This includes an audio guide in different languages.
