The old chapel, Oratorio de Santa Caterina de Alexandria, standing on a hill in the entrance to the Port of Sóller, now houses the new museum dedicated to the sea. This is the "Museu de la Mar", a centre for the interpretation of the history of Sóller and its port in relation to the sea.

For centuries, the sea has been the main means of communication for Sóller with the rest of the world, enabling fishing and commerce, and contact with other cultures. The objective of the museum is to promote and inform on the most important aspects of this close relationship between the Sollerics and the sea, that has conditioned their history and their culture.

The Oratorio, built around the year 1280, has some extraordinary views over the Port of Sóller and over the northern coast of Mallorca. The renewed exhibition space shows ancient naval objects relating to the sea, distributed around the exterior of the building, the entrance and a suggestive exhibition hall decorated in wood with blue tones. The emigration, fishing and commerce are the main topics covered. A visit to the museum ends in the audiovisual room, a luminous and visual installation that plays with colour, sound, transparencies and mirrors of the sea, where a video can be seen about the exhibition in several languages.
