The Soller Railway Company was created in 1905 with a view to facilitating the transport of passengers and merchandise between Soller and Palma, avoiding the twisty road that goes over the Serra de Alfabia via the so called Coll de Soller. A few years later, in 1912, the Soller train began its 27.3 km route that separates Palma from Soller. The following year, 1913, the electric tram which joins Soller and its Port was inaugurated. Finally in 1929 the railway line Palma-Soller was electrified and the tourist route began to be promoted.

As well as the attractive natural scenery throughout the route, the station buildings in Palma, Son Sardina, Bunyola and Soller are really worth mentioning. The tunnels are also spectacular, particularly one which is 2,876 metres long and also the viaduct "of five bridges" with five arches 8 metres high. The train stops briefly at the Mirador des Pujol d'en Banya, where there are imposing views over the valley of Soller and the Serra de Tramuntana.

The main attractions of the tram between Soller and the Port are its route through the centre of Soller, the iron bridge over the Torrent Major stream, plus the views over the bay, the natural port, the beach and the picturesque urban centre, with its restaurants and cafés.

The Soller train and tram still preserve today all its charm of the beginning the XX century and over the years they have become one of the main tourist attractions on Mallorca.
